Tenuta di Fessina produces refined, volcanic wines across Etna’s northern, eastern, and southwestern slopes, expressing the mountain’s diversity with elegance and authenticity.
Founded in 2007 by Tuscan pioneer Silvia Maestrelli, Tenuta di Fessina is today one of the reference estates on Mount Etna. The estate is rooted in a historic vineyard framed by two ancient lava flows, with centenarian vines still on their original rootstock. With CEO Jacopo Maniaci and winemaker Benedetto Alessandro, the philosophy is centered on native grapes—Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Carricante—expressed through Etna’s mosaic of contrade and slopes.
Tenuta di Fessina spans three key subzones: on the northern slope, Rovittello’s Contrada Moscamento (670 m) and Contrada Rampante (800 m) provide sandy, basalt-rich soils and some of the oldest vines on Etna; on the eastern slope in Milo, vineyards at ~800–950 m in Contrade Caselle, Rinazzo, and Volpare yield Etna Bianco Superiore from Carricante on young, volcanic soils; and on the southwestern slope in Biancavilla, Contrada Spadatrappo sits at 940 m with old, mixed volcanic, limestone, and clay soils. This range of terroirs—high altitudes, diverse soils, and varied exposures—shapes wines of precision, freshness, and longevity.
The reds, led by Nerello Mascalese, show elegance, verticality, and mineral drive, culminating in the flagship “Musmeci” Etna Rosso Riserva. Whites are driven by Carricante, from the vibrant and saline Erse Etna Bianco to the profound single-vineyard “Musmeci” from the contrada Caselle, a wine of persistence and complexity. Across the portfolio, the focus is minimal intervention, capturing the character of each slope and lava flow.
