Fire & Altitude: Volcanic Wines from Tenuta di Fessina

From the black volcanic slopes of Etna, Tenuta di Fessina crafts wines of striking minerality, tension, and longevity. This special selection highlights a series of mature vintages and large formats from three of the estate’s benchmark bottlings: the saline Carricante-based A’Puddara, the rare monovarietal L’Aeneo, and the profound old-vine Nerello Mascalese of Il Musmeci.

Mount Etna is Europe’s highest active volcano at 11,000 feet, dominating Sicily’s eastern coast. For millennia, eruptions have sculpted its slopes, leaving a mosaic of soils — from basalt and ash to tuff, sand, and clay — each imparting subtle variations to the wines. Vineyards are perched up to 3,300 feet, where dramatic diurnal shifts preserve acidity and freshness, while sea breezes from the Ionian temper the summer heat.

Viticulture here is both ancient and revived: old bush-trained alberello vines, many over a century old and planted on terraces of black lava stone, now share the landscape with carefully managed modern vineyards. The result is a patchwork of contrade — Etna’s “crus” — each defined by altitude, exposure, and lava flows, similar in nuance to Burgundy’s climats or Piedmont’s crus.

The wines are unmistakable: nervy, vertical, saline, and mineral-driven, with remarkable aging potential. Reds are dominated by Nerello Mascalese (often likened to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo), lifted by Nerello Cappuccio, while whites showcase the steely Carricante, a grape capable of crystalline precision and depth.

Library Selection Wines:

A’Puddara – Etna Bianco DOC Carricante 100%

One of Etna’s benchmark white wines, A’Puddara comes from old Carricante vines planted at high elevation on the southern slope of the volcano (hence why it is not an Etna Superiore). Fermented in large oak barrels following historic Etnean tradition, the wine balances smoky volcanic tension with saline freshness and remarkable texture. With bottle age, Carricante develops extraordinary complexity, recalling mature Riesling, white Burgundy, and mountain-grown Chenin Blanc while remaining unmistakably Etna in character. They can age for twenty years or more.

L’Aeneo – Sicilia DOC Nerello Cappuccio 100%

Produced entirely from Nerello Cappuccio — a rarity on Etna — L’Aeneo showcases the grape’s exotic spice, supple texture, and volcanic minerality. Sourced from Biancavilla’s sandy volcanic soils and dramatic diurnal swings, the wine is both savory and vibrant, with notes of plum, incense, black pepper, and wild herbs.

Il Musmeci – Etna Rosso DOC Nerello Mascalese 100%

Sourced from centenarian alberello vines rooted in volcanic soils beneath Etna’s historic lava flows, Il Musmeci is one of the estate’s most compelling wines. Often described as the “Barolo of Etna,” it combines haunting aromatics with fine tannins, bright acidity, and profound mineral structure. Extended aging softens the wine’s volcanic austerity into something silky, layered, and deeply expressive.Available Wines
