About This Producer

Italy – Montalcino

Caparzo, owned by the Angelini family, helped shape Brunello’s modern identity, producing age-worthy Sangiovese that reflects Montalcino’s terroir diversity.

Caparzo, founded in the late 1960s, was one of the pioneering estates of modern Brunello di Montalcino. The name derives from “Ca’ Pazzo,” meaning “crazy house,” a playful nod to the spirit of its founders who saw the untapped potential of Montalcino before it became world-renowned. Since 1998, the estate has been owned by the Angelini family, who have invested significantly in modernizing vineyard practices and cellar facilities while preserving the estate’s heritage.

Caparzo’s Brunello di Montalcino is noted for its structure and longevity, sourced from vineyards across multiple parts of the appellation. This zoning approach, innovative at the time, ensures a balance of power, elegance, and aromatic nuance. Single-vineyard bottlings highlight the diversity of Montalcino terroirs, while Rosso di Montalcino provides an approachable counterpart.

Montalcino’s patchwork of soils and elevations — from galestro schist to clay and alberese limestone — enables Sangiovese to show remarkable complexity and aging capacity. Caparzo remains a vital bridge between tradition and modernity in Brunello.
