In short: Bass Phillip defines Australian Pinot Noir with profound, age-worthy wines of perfume and finesse.
Founded in 1979 by Phillip Jones, Bass Phillip has long been a touchstone for Australian Pinot Noir, producing some of the most sought-after and collectible wines in the Southern Hemisphere. Named after explorers George Bass and Arthur Phillip, the estate was established with the ambition of crafting wines of Burgundian finesse from Victoria’s cool Gippsland region.
Today, Bass Phillip begins a new chapter under the ownership of Burgundy’s Jean-Marie Fourrier, a celebrated winemaker from Gevrey-Chambertin. Fourrier brings his deep knowledge of Pinot Noir and a refined Burgundian sensibility to the estate, ensuring continuity of quality while also elevating the precision and detail in both vineyard management and cellar practices.
Bass Phillip remains best known for its Premium and Reserve Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, bottlings that rival top Burgundy for perfume, depth, and age-worthiness. The cool, maritime-influenced climate of Gippsland, with its extended ripening season and ancient soils, provides natural conditions for wines that balance concentration with tension.
