Few wine regions can claim a history as intertwined with a great city as Vienna. For centuries, vineyards have climbed the hills surrounding Austria's capital, supplying imperial courts, local taverns, and discerning collectors alike. At the heart of this tradition is Wiener Gemischter Satz, Vienna's signature field blend, where multiple grape varieties are planted, harvested, and fermented together—a practice that predates modern varietal winemaking and remains one of the city's most distinctive expressions of terroir.

No producer has done more to elevate Vienna's vineyards onto the world stage than Fritz Wieninger. A pioneer of biodynamic farming and one of Austria's most respected growers, Wieninger has championed the classification of Vienna's finest sites, demonstrating that these historic slopes are capable of producing wines of profound complexity and longevity. His top bottlings originate from 1ÖTW Erste Lage vineyards—the Austrian equivalent of premier cru sites—where ancient limestone soils, favorable exposures, and generations of viticultural history combine to create singular expressions of place.

The 2022 vintage delivered wines of exceptional purity and balance. A long growing season, warm summer days, cool August nights, and a carefully timed harvest produced wines with ripe fruit, vibrant acidity, and remarkable transparency to site. This collection highlights both Vienna's historic field blends and a series of increasingly rare single-vineyard and Grand Select bottlings that showcase the full potential of the region.

The Historic Field Blends of Nussberg

2022 Wieninger Wiener Gemischter Satz Ried Ulm 1ÖTW Nussberg

From a steep, south-facing slope overlooking the Danube, Ulm is rooted in fossil-rich limestone soils formed from an ancient coral reef. A traditional field blend of nine varieties, it offers remarkable texture, layered orchard fruit, chalky minerality, and a lingering saline finish. A compelling expression of Vienna's most historic wine style.

2022 Wieninger Wiener Gemischter Satz Ried Rosengartel 1ÖTW Nussberg

Long considered one of Vienna's most prized vineyard sites, Rosengartel was already celebrated during the Habsburg Empire for the quality of its wines. A blend led by Grüner Veltliner alongside Pinot Blanc, Neuburger, Traminer, and Riesling, it combines aromatic richness, limestone-driven precision, and exceptional complexity. A benchmark example of grand cru Gemischter Satz.

A Grand Cru of Vienna

2022 Wieninger Wiener Riesling Ried Preussen 1ÖTW Nussberg

Situated in the heart of the Nussberg, Preussen is one of Vienna's most distinguished Riesling sites. Exceptionally calcareous soils and mature biodynamically farmed vines produce a wine of remarkable clarity and mineral tension. Notes of yellow orchard fruit, mandarin zest, blossom honey, and crushed stone unfold across a palate that is both generous and precise.

Grand Select: Wieninger's Finest Selections

Reserved only for exceptional vintages and sourced from the estate's most prized parcels, the Grand Select wines represent the pinnacle of Wieninger's portfolio. Produced in extremely limited quantities, they combine meticulous vineyard selection with extended élevage to create wines built for long-term cellaring.

2022 Wieninger Chardonnay Grand Select

Drawn from Wieninger's oldest Chardonnay vineyards on the Bisamberg, this wine reflects both the power and refinement of Vienna's limestone soils. Extended aging in French oak brings depth and texture while preserving freshness and precision. Flint, citrus, stone fruit, and subtle oak nuances culminate in a Chardonnay of remarkable complexity and longevity.

2022 Wieninger Pinot Noir Grand Select

Crafted from the estate's finest Pinot Noir parcels across both Bisamberg and Nussberg, Grand Select is a study in elegance and restraint. Dark cherry, subtle spice, and mineral nuance are framed by fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Refined, balanced, and age-worthy, it stands among the most compelling examples of Austrian Pinot Noir today.

The Single-Vineyard Pinot Noirs

The 2022 vintage marks a milestone for Wieninger, with the inaugural release of two single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that rank among the finest red wines ever produced by the estate.

2022 Wieninger Pinot Noir Ried Preussen Nussberg

From the historic Preussen vineyard in the center of the Nussberg, this Pinot Noir is sourced from mature vines grafted to a prized Burgundy clone and rooted in fossil-rich limestone and clay soils. Silky and precise, it offers red berry fruit, crushed stone minerality, and remarkable finesse, revealing an entirely new dimension of Vienna Pinot Noir.

2022 Wieninger Pinot Noir Ried Rothen Bisamberg

Perched high on the Bisamberg, Ried Rothen is planted at Burgundy-level densities and farmed almost entirely by hand. Sandy loess soils over limestone and constant cooling winds produce fruit of extraordinary concentration and elegance. The resulting wine is intensely mineral, beautifully structured, and exceptionally long-lived—a profound Pinot Noir that firmly establishes Vienna among Europe's great cool-climate red wine regions.
