There are few producers in Chablis as steadfast in their philosophy as Louis Michel & Fils. For generations, the domaine has championed an uncompromising vision of terroir transparency: stainless-steel élevage, minimal intervention, and an unwavering refusal to mask Chablis’ naturally saline, limestone-driven character beneath oak.
The 2023 vintage offered a fascinating contrast of ripeness and freshness. A warm growing season produced wines with generosity and open-knit charm, yet the finest examples retained the tension and mineral precision that define serious Chablis.
At Louis Michel, the domaine’s non-oaked approach gives unusual transparency to the 2023s, allowing each cru to articulate its personality with remarkable precision — from the structure and concentration of Butteaux to the tensile minerality of Séchets and the understated elegance of Montmain. The result is a style that feels unmistakably classical: incisive, site-driven, and profoundly pure.
2023 Release:
We are offering a highly limited release of the 2023 vintage:
Chablis Premier Cru Butteaux — only 36 bottles
Drawn from four parcels in the western reaches of the Montmains valley, Butteaux is one of Louis Michel’s most structured and characterful Premier Crus. Compact clay and marl-rich soils layered with fossilized oyster deposits produce a wine of striking complexity, balancing ripe citrus and orchard fruit with pronounced saline minerality and chalky tension. The steep, well-ventilated slopes and south-southeast exposure lend both concentration and energy, making Butteaux especially compelling for collectors drawn to the more powerful side of Chablis.
Chablis Premier Cru Séchets — only 24 bottles
Vinified separately only since 2010, Séchets has quickly emerged as one of the most distinctive expressions within the Vaillons valley. Its marl-influenced soils and shallow, limestone-rich terrain produce a wine of remarkable aromatic complexity and finely etched minerality, balancing citrus, crushed shell, and chalk with a taut, linear structure. Sunny yet well-ventilated, Séchets captures a quintessentially Chablis character while offering the depth and precision to reward long-term cellaring.
Chablis Premier Cru Montmain — only 36 bottles
Sourced from four parcels along a cool, clay-dominant hillside on Chablis’ left bank, Montmain is prized for its finesse and quiet precision. The combination of limestone-rich soils, steady winds, and southeast exposure yields a wine of striking balance, marked by notes of citrus blossom, white flowers, and subtle saline minerality. In Louis Michel’s hands, Montmain expresses the more elegant and finely etched side of Premier Cru Chablis, with freshness and clarity at its core.
Wines are available until June 2nd or until sold out. All wines sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
