Bordeaux conversations often begin on the Left Bank, where the 1855 Classification established a hierarchy that continues to shape the region’s reputation today. Yet the origins of Bordeaux wine are perhaps nowhere more deeply rooted than in Saint-Émilion, a landscape of limestone hills whose history stretches back centuries before the Médoc achieved fame. Beneath the medieval village lies a remarkable subterranean world, including one of Europe’s largest monolithic churches, carved directly into the limestone that continues to define the region’s greatest vineyards.
Just beyond the village sits Château La Gaffelière, one of Saint-Émilion’s most historic estates. Its vineyards occupy a privileged position between Ausone and Pavie, traversing a mosaic of limestone plateau, clay-limestone slopes, and more siliceous soils at the base of the hillside. This diversity of terroir provides both power and finesse, yielding wines distinguished by their freshness, aromatic complexity, and remarkable capacity to age.
The estate has remained in the hands of the Malet Roquefort family since 1705, making it one of the oldest continuously family-owned properties in Saint-Émilion. Archaeological discoveries on the property, including Roman mosaics dating to the fourth century, hint at a viticultural history extending far beyond the family’s stewardship. Today, only the finest parcels from the estate's Grand Cru Classé vineyards are selected for the Grand Vin, reflecting an uncompromising pursuit of quality.
Over the past two decades, extensive replanting and vineyard refinement have elevated La Gaffelière to new heights. Cabernet Franc has assumed an increasingly important role in the blend, bringing aromatic lift, structure, and precision to complement Merlot’s depth and generosity. The result is a wine that captures the elegance of Saint-Émilion while expressing a distinctly modern sense of balance and energy.
